Welcome to Lake Taupo
Often described as the jewel in the crown of the North Island, the magnificent Lake Taupo is the geographic centre of the North Island, and is set amidst clean green countryside, spectacular mountain scenery, beautiful native bush and some of the largest pine forests in the Southern Hemisphere.
The district is an area of considerable beauty and diversity. It is an adventure central, the epitome of 100% Pure New Zealand, and truly an all seasons destination. Dotted around the lake shores are some beautiful bays and townships with a lot to offer visitors from all walks of life.
Lake Taupo began erupting 300,000 years ago with the shape of the modern volcano largely created in the Oruanui eruption 26,500 years ago. This eruption was followed by the Taupo eruption just 1,800 years ago, one of the largest ever recorded in the world. It felled great forests, burned trees 30 kilometres away and covered 20,000 square kilometres with pumice (porous igneous rock). Scientific research indicates the Taupo eruption may have been recorded as far away as Rome and China, where literature tells of the sun in the east being blood-red, lacking in light and giving the appearance of the heavens being ablaze.
Despite its dramatic creation, the Lake Taupo region offers you the best of both worlds; it is an adventurer's paradise, but for those looking for a getaway to relax and unwind, every leisurely pursuit you can think of is waiting at your doorstep. The Taupo district is undoubtedly a year round holiday destination and we promise you will not be disapointed!
